Breed characteristics

The breed in general

The German Friesian cattle (DSN) originate from the marshes and lowlands in the area of the Dutch-Friesian North Sea.

Color:

German Friesian Cattle are constantly black and white. Head, neck, chest and rump are black. Legs to carpal and hock, the belly and udder are always white. The classical pied carcase includes a white chest and pelvis belt as well as big centered black patches. The top line is never completely white.

Polled status:

DSN cattle are genetically horned.

Body:

Compared to Holstein cattle, DSN cattle are smaller with less milk yield. They show lots of harmony with tabular wide, slightly sloped rumps for trouble-free calvings as well as good to very good back and haunch muscularity. In addition, they have correct feet & legs and hooves for best locomotion in all kinds of housing systems.

Production traits:

DSN cattle are long-lasting cows with good fertility and good fattening yield and are less prone to diseases. They have great roughage feed intake capacity making them suitable for grazing. DSN cattle have a genetic milk production potential of 7,000 to more than 8,000 kg milk with 4.30 % fat and 3.70 % protein.
